20th JUNKO RUBBER BASEBALL TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO GUAM

November 25, 2013

Tournament kicks off November 30th at Leo Palace

(Tumon, Guam) The island will once again host the Friendship Junko Rubber Baseball Tournament scheduled for November 30 – December 1, 2013 at the Leo Palace Guam Resort Baseball Fields in Yona. This year’s tournament marks the 20th anniversary of university teams from Japan visiting our island to play baseball. In fact, four college teams from Japan’s Junko University will be competing against teams from Guam’s Major League division and a select team from the Guam Amateur Baseball Association.

The game is different from typical baseball in that it uses a rubber baseball, which has greater bounce and trajectory when hit. Originally, 3 teams from Japan with roughly 70 athletes would travel to Guam for this special game of friendship. Today, about 100 athletes, including coaching staff and management, are expected to arrive in the coming days.

“This friendly competition between Guam and Japan is an annual celebration of the warm relationship that exists between the island and the country responsible for almost 70% of Guam’s tourist arrivals each year,” said GVB General Manager Karl Pangelinan. “We encourage island residents to attend the games in support of Guam’s growing sports tourism industry.”
