6th Annual Pleasure Island Guam BBQ Block Party returns on July 7

11 teams to vie for BBQ trophies and prizes

(Tumon, Guam) — The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) announced at a July 3rd press conference the lineup of BBQ competitors and events scheduled for the 6th Annual Pleasure Island Guam BBQ Block Party on Saturday, July 7, 2018 in Pleasure Island, Tumon.

The BBQ Block Party is an annual GVB signature event that closes San Vitores Road in Pleasure Island, between T Galleria by DFS and The Plaza Shopping Center, for a pedestrian-only event filled with Guam’s biggest BBQ competition, live entertainment, activities for the family, food and beverage vendors, shopping and more! As with all GVB events, BBQ Block Party is open to the public, and admission is free.

“Each year, we look forward to showcasing our unique barbecue culture and our warm Håfa Adai spirit to the world through the Pleasure Island Guam BBQ Block Party,” said GVB Acting President and CEO Tony Muña. “What makes this event so much fun is that residents and visitors gather together on the street in Pleasure Island for one of Guam’s best events. We are proud of how the BBQ Block Party has grown each year, and the competition will be fierce as usual. We invite everyone to join us in Tumon on July 7th!”

Serious BBQ competition

The Micronesian Chefs Association partners with GVB each year to judge the BBQ competition, and the team at Deloitte will officially tally the results. $4,600 in prize money will be awarded. This year, 10 teams will compete in the three BBQ categories --  chicken, pork and beef. One outstanding chef will be crowned the Ultimate Grill Master Champion. A celebrity chef from the Philippines is expected to make an appearance and possibly participate. Trophies and prizes will be awarded at 9:00 p.m. on the main stage.

Activities and vendors

The BBQ Block Party will feature Guam’s most popular confectionery, food and beverage vendors, including the new T Galleria by DFS food truck that will feature made in Guam goodies. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., event goers can enjoy live music performances by the Guam Territorial Marching Band and mascots during the opening parade; Part Time; DJ Sylnt and Prominence. The popular Hot Diggety Dog Hot Dog eating contest is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the main stage. Children can enjoy free face painting and balloon art by Guam street artists throughout the evening. Making a return this year will be the Class Car Show, a collection of Guam’s most pristine classic cars by local collectors.

T Galleria by DFS will be offering free gifts with purchase and in-store specials on July 7. The Plaza Shopping Center will be offering pop-ups and in-store specials throughout the evening. Shoppers can inquire in the stores for more details.

Parking and road closure notice

San Vitores Road in Tumon — from the crosswalk between UnderWater World and T Galleria by DFS to the SandCastle entrance traffic light — will be closed from 9 a.m. Saturday, July 7 through 3:00 a.m. Sunday, July 8 to ensure the safety of event participants. Parking will be available at properties in Pleasure Island Tumon and at Ypao Beach Park’s north lot, where a free trolley service will shuttle guests in 20-minute intervals. The public is also reminded that pets, outside food, drinks and coolers are not allowed. GVB asks that motorists pay special attention to pedestrian traffic on July 7, and GVB thanks the Visitor Safety Officers, Guam Police Department and Guam Fire Department for their support in keeping everyone safe.
